About Duluth Edison Charter Schools

Established in 1997, Duluth Edison Charter Schools (DECS) is known for its reputation throughout Minnesota and the Midwest as setting the standard for charter school administration. With a tradition steeped in creativity and entrepreneurialism, coupled with a human-centric, community-focused culture, DECS provides the perfect backdrop and platform for forward-thinking leaders, staff, and students.

In addition to paving the way for how charter schools are administered in Minnesota, DECS is also an anchor within the Duluth community, providing both stability and consistency for its staff, the residents of Duluth, and the children and families it serves.

Historically, the school attracts and retains a team of committed professionals who often spend their entire career at DECS while students and families remain connected to the school long after graduation. This connectedness plays a critical role in the success of the school and the success of our students, staff, and stakeholders. It is the golden thread that keeps the school united.

Through its longstanding commitment to personal and academic growth, as well as its adherence to values, innovation, and progressive learning, DECS remains one of the top charter schools in the country. Key components of the DECS culture include a freedom to experiment and a freedom to fail approach to innovation, a supportive and solution-based mentality, and a belief system that we are always doing something special.

Working for Duluth Edison Charter Schools comes with so many great opportunities, but few stand above the privilege of working with incredible staff members, some who have become lifelong friends.

As an outdoor educator, having one hundred and seventy acres of school forest land to teach, learn, and explore from is an amazing gift that keeps on giving. From skiing and snowshoeing to maple tree tapping and animal tracking, every day in an adventure.

Working for Edison has been an amazing experience.  I have been challenged as a teacher, encouraged and supported to grow in my professional work experience.  I don’t feel as if I am just a teacher but am a valued staff member with my own unique talents.

Administration listens with a growth mindset and gives us the flexibility to adapt, grow and learn individually and as teams. Administration really does want us to focus on the whole child, not just teaching from an academic perspective.  This mindset enhances the culture and climate within my own classroom as well as builds relationships with co-workers by giving us creative license to have fun! The staff are truly the greatest jewels at Edison. We are a family that supports, uplifts, and strives to make the workplace a positive environment.

I have been a teacher with Duluth Edison Charter Schools for the entire 25 years that this program has operated in Duluth.  This started as an educational alternative committed to family choice and centered on student’s success.   I value the fact that parents have chosen to send their children to our school.  I have had the privilege of working with wonderful families who sincerely want what is best for their children.

My coworkers have kept me with this school through both good and difficult times. They  have generously shared their expertise, time and support and the results have been amazing.
